Like any season, whether dry, hot, humid, sunny, or rainy, diseases are a part of our eco-system. As Cebu goes through a longer spell of rainy season, which we have been experiencing for the past few weeks, there have been a few reported diseases and illnesses at a diagnostic clinic in Cebu.

Common Diseases During the Rainy Season

  1. Leptospirosis

Per medical exam in Cebu, this is a bacterial infection that you get from rodents, and other vermin…meaning ‘common rat’. The bacteria can easily enter the body, usually and more commonly through open wounds. Walking through flooded waters that have the bacteria, when you have an open wound, can easily acquire such disease.

Precaution would include wearing boots when walking or wading through flooded waters. If you have an open wound, make sure you cover properly. Another option is to simply stay away from flooded water, especially one that is stagnant and near dumped garbage.

 

  1. Dengue fever

Easily one of the most menacing illnesses is the dengue fever. Whether sunny or rainy, this viral infection is more commonly worrisome during the rainy season because of the existence of stagnant water where eggs of the Aedes aegypti mosquito lay. At the same time, it is not just dengue that this mosquito transmits. There is Chikungunya and yellow fever.

Precaution would include always cleaning your surroundings and making sure you empty containers that can possibly contain stagnant water.

 

  1. Influenza

Commonly known as the ‘flu’, this is a viral infection and would easily affect those have a weak immune system. The patient would experience coughing and the ‘flu’ generally affects and respiratory area

Precaution would always be all about cleanliness. Wash your hands after touching anything that you use in public, and to make sure you use clean utensils all the time.
