7 Common Immunizations that Adults Need

In the most recent immunization recommendations from the Philippine Foundation for Vaccination (PFV) and the Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, all Filipino adults, women planning to get pregnant and pregnant women should take the time to have these immunizations. All the same, LH Prime Cebu suggests that you talk to your doctor before getting these immunization shots. SmartParenting shares the following common immunizations for adults:

1. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) — According to Dr. Cecilia Ladines-Llave, resident doctor at the PGH, the human papilloma virus has more than 100 types and some can develop into cancer. This vaccine protects you against HPV-related cancer for life and also from genital warts as well.
Recommended for: 

Females 9-55 years old

Males 10-26 years old

Number of shots: typically 3 doses for adults
2. Tetanus, Diptheria Acellular Pertussis (Tt, Td, Tdap) — This 3-in-1 shot is recommended for all adults. Getting this vaccine protects the newborn against whooping cough in the first few months of life.  
Recommended for: 

All adults particularly pregnant women
Number of shots: 3 doses
3. Influenza — a respiratory disease that can infect the nose, throat and lungs, it causes mild to severe illness that can lead to serious problems and complications. It’s highly contagious so those living in the same household and can easily be passed to another family member. 

Recommended for: 

All adults
Number of shots: yearly

  1. Hepatitis AHepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection. It’s transmitted through eating food or water contaminated by the virus or via a contaminated object placed into another person’s mouth.
    Recommended for:

All adults

Number of shots: 2 doses
5. Hepatitis B — Hepatitis B is a serious disease that can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death through contact with the blood of an infected person or having intercourse with an infected person. An infected pregnant mother can also pass it on to her newborn.
Recommended for: 

All adults

Number of shots: 3 doses
6. Varicella — Varicella vaccination is for preventing chickenpox, a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Chickenpox causes an itchy, blister-like rash, tiredness and fever. It spreads through droplets in the air that come from an infected person’s saliva, sneeze, cough or fluid in the blisters of the skin.

Recommended for: 

All adults, except pregnant women

Number of shots: 2 doses
7. Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) — Measles, mumps and rubella are all infectious diseases. The 3-in-1 shot is recommended for everyone. Measles and mumps can cause serious complications to the mother and unborn child. Rubella is a mild disease but increases the chances of miscarriage when infected during the first trimester of pregnancy.

All adults

Number of shots: 2 doses
